What vaccines does my dog need for boarding?

The core vaccines

Rabies is required by law in Ontario for dogs over three months, and every boarding setup will ask for it. DHPP is the combined vaccine that covers distemper, hepatitis (adenovirus), parvovirus and parainfluenza, and most vets give it as a puppy series followed by boosters every one to three years. Your vet's records will show the date given and when the next booster is due, and that date is what a sitter or kennel checks.

Bordetella and kennel cough

Kennel cough is a contagious respiratory infection that spreads wherever dogs share air, whether that is a kennel, a daycare, a dog park or a groomer. The Bordetella vaccine reduces the risk and the severity, though no vaccine prevents every case. It is given as a nasal spray, an oral dose or an injection, and it needs a few days to take effect, so book it at least a week before the stay rather than the day before.

Ellen strongly recommends Bordetella for boarding and daycare because guest dogs mix in the house and yard. If your dog develops a honking cough, sneezing or a runny nose in the weeks after any dog gathering, call your vet; most cases are mild and clear on their own, but puppies and seniors can need treatment.

Records, timing and puppies

Bring a copy of your dog's vaccination certificate or a clear photo of it to the Meet & Greet, or ask your vet to email it. Vaccines given the day before a stay do not count as protection, so check the dates when you book rather than at drop-off. Puppies can board once they have finished their DHPP series and had their rabies shot, which is usually around 16 weeks; ask your vet if you are not sure.
